That sweet smell of unboxing.
Just unboxed and installed the Samsung 840 series 250GB solid state drive into my antique mid-2009 Macbook Pro.
After a fair bit of research on Flipkart, this seemed like a complete bang for the buck compared to SSDs with similar specs from Corsair or OCZ, which apparently are better suited for macs. And this one’s one heck of a looker as well!
The performance improvements were staggering! To put things into perspective, my mac now boots up in precisely 18 seconds, a humongous bump from the previous 2 minutes it took to load the desktop. Enough said.
The battery life seems to have hit the roof too. Two hours of casual browsing with 60% brightness and I’ve still got an hour to go! Impressive for a four year old battery. And did I mention there’s been pin drop silence inside the machine? And way too less heat too. Really handy in times when you realize you’ve gradually slumped into this posture in a couple of hours of sitting on the same chair:
One good piece of advice I picked up from the internet was to go for a SATA 6Gbps interface, even if your computer supported only up to 3Gbps. That’s because no matter how sooner or later, you will eventually switch to a newer machine and you will almost certainly want to continue using this disk as your primary disk.
It sure looks like a phenomenal buy considering it’s not just got my four years old macbook pro back on it’s feet, but turned it into a blazingly fast computer from the future.
Though the reliability of the drive will be only tested as time passes, I can blindly bank on Samsung with it’s build quality and support when it comes to storage components. Unlike their smartphones.
Fabulous post from Marco Arment on the Yahoo-Tumblr deal.
Cracked up at “I won’t be switching to dedicated day and night iPhones" in the end!
